Daring to take a look at who you are is a powerful journey to go on. It’s also an opportunity to reflect on where you’ve come from, what makes you unique, your strengths, and what you could improve upon. For VMware, 2014 marked a pivotal moment for our workplace community when we committed to being a company that is diverse and inclusive. We are taking our company to the next level by driving systemic culture change for our company and across the tech industry.

The Next Step for VMware: VMinclusion

Leveraging the learnings and measurable progress of VMwomen, we have embarked on the next step of our journey: creating a broader diversity initiative called VMinclusion. We know that VMinclusion is central to achieving our business goals. As a multinational company we need talent that can compete in and win in every market and seamlessly team across the globe. The VMinclusion goals are in three major areas—culture, accountability and reputation:

1. Culture: Foster and promote a culture that is inclusive of all forms of diversity

  • Educating managers to disrupt unconscious bias in people processes (like hiring decisions and performance conversations) continues to be a top priority.  With 91% of managers who attend the course reporting taking action to disrupt bias, this focus is making a difference.
  • Encouraging all employees to be their authentic selves is a focus through storytelling and enabling inclusion-focused business resource groups called Power of Difference communities (PODs).
  • Offering a research-based curriculum, DIALOGUE peer mentoring circles, to navigate gender bias in the workplace, advance women’s leadership and advocate for change.

2. Accountability: Relentlessly and continuously improve women’s and underrepresented minorities’ representation

  • Business leaders have goals to improve representation within their organization and we review metrics in our Op Reviews.
  • Measurement of representation as well as hiring, promotion and retention rates enables us to know what practices work and where we need to improve further.

3. Reputation: Be an employer of choice by driving real business and social outcomes

  • Inspiring and supporting the community of female and diverse talent in technology in an investment focus for us through efforts such as Women Who Code and the inaugural WT2 (Women Transforming Technology) event, which convened over 3,000 professionals from across Silicon Valley  to discuss how to tackle the lack of gender diversity in the technology industry, participate in growth & development sessions, and create visibility for the next generation of female technology leaders.

Dare to Be Yourself

As we continue on our journey, we work to continuously affirm our commitment and celebrate our people and all their glorious differences. Storytelling is a powerful engine of culture, and our Dare to Be Yourself series taps this power to connect our people as unique and extraordinary individuals across a diverse global organization.

Over the next few months, we will be sharing authentic leadership stories from the voices of our people across the VMware Careers Site and our other digital channels to show how celebrating our people can inspire the leader within all of us to thrive. Today, we are excited to share our first leadership video in the series featuring Rich Lang, SVP of Human Resources at VMware.

Together, we can harness the power of human difference! Share how you #daretobeyourself and help inspire others to be their authentic selves each day.
